Bridge films could be new tourist draw

A PLAN to spend £60,000 on bringing together archive films of the Forth bridges for a new visitor centre will be discussed tomorrow (Friday).

The Forth Estuary Transport Authority (Feta) could provide half of the money to gather films of the road bridge and digitise them to a professional standard.

Network Rail have also been asked to collate footage of the rail bridge which could be viewed in a proposed new visitor centre at North Queensferry railway station.

The Forth Bridge, opened in 1890, and the Forth Road Bridge, which opened in 1964, are a source of national pride but facilities for tourists to find out more are limited.

Feta members will be told that various cuttings of films exist from the bridge’s construction, including a professional film to mark its opening in 1964. Other short films have also been made down the years and a new exhibition would help meet the Forth Bridges Visitor Centre Trust’s aims of furthering knowledge of the two bridges and providing a visitor centre.

A temporary visitor centre had been housed in the Queensferry Hotel until recently and the feasibility of moving to the railway station is being examined.

The report states, “Clearly the potential exists for a series of DVDs for use in a refurbished visitor centre or for fund-raising which would enhance the visitor experience and be used as an educational aid.

“With the Government’s expressed commitment to another bridge at Queensferry, interest will grow and the tourist potential will never be higher.”
