Web scammers target Fife trading standards officers
DOPEY web fraudsters have targeted a Fife Council department who deal with email scams.
The team of trading standards professionals received an email purporting to be from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) advising they were entitled to a refund of £188.50
Janice Russell, fair trading officer in the consumer education team, said, “I was immediately suspicious of the email, particularly as I deal with the majority of the scams that are in the public arena. On checking with HMRC they confirmed that it was indeed a scam.”
She said many similar scams are in operation internationally and West Fifers should be suspicious of requests for personal and/or security details.
For further information and advice contact the consumer education team on 08451 555555, ext. 440363.
