A NEW 15-minute ferry service between Fife and Edinburgh could be operating as early as next year.

It would complement the hover ferry service considered by Stagecoach between Kirkcaldy and Leith.

A drilling barge recently arrived at Burntisland Harbour to investigate possible locations.

Dr Bob McLellan, head of transportation services at Fife Council, said, “Early parts of the study have already shown that there is a viable business case for a ferry service between Burntisland and Granton.”

He revealed that a number of would-be ferry operators had already said they would be interested in running the service.

Mr McLellan added, “Both services would provide a direct connection between Fife and Edinburgh, avoiding the longer and more congested route via Queensferry.”

Firms will be invited to tender later this year, with ferries operating by the end of 2009.
