VIDEO: A bright orange flying saucer with flashing lights...

A BRIGHT orange flying saucer with flashing lights... Don't tell members of one Dunfermline family there's no such thing as a UFO.

For they've seen one - and have a four-minute film to prove it.

David Hill (39) and partner Elizabeth Cameron (33) were mesmerised on Sunday night when they witnessed what they described a hovering UFO above their house in Arthur Street at about 8.15pm.

But they still had the presence of mind to call on their neighbours and dash for Elizabeth's digital camera to capture the excitement on film.

David said, "We saw a bright orange rod-like structure emerge from the south of Dunfermline. It stalled in the sky above us and then we could clearly see it change its shape into a large orange ring, like a doughnut.

"It was enormous and the ring itself had an orange glow but in the middle was flashing orange, red, yellow and white lights.

"It came into the sky above Dunfermline and hovered above our house for approximately five minutes and then moved north.

"From where we were it looked as though it was coming from the Lothians."

He added, "When it lifted off it was orange and like a rectangle; when it got into the air it became square and once it was above us, from the angle it became a saucer.

"We shouted to our neighbours next door and they came out. We were so exasperated by what we were seeing, you're kind of rooted to the spot a bit."

David, Elizabeth and two-year-old son Adam gathered in the back garden with their neighbours and their neighbours' parents, with all eyes transfixed to the sky above.

<img src="http://www.dunfermlinepress.com/images/12/dp_ufo_2008-10.jpg" alt="" />

"We were stunned," David admitted. "Initially it looked like a rocket lifting off but it was too slow for that and too big - it was absolutely enormous.

"Once it got above us the dimensions became obvious. It was a saucer shape. It virtually stopped above our head and we were getting a clear view of it, and at that stage we realised this was something absolutely remarkable."

He continued, "We were quite impressed with how quickly we thought of getting the camera, I think we got it after about 40 seconds. We were lucky to have captured it.

"I knew from the way it was moving it wasn't like an aeroplane. The way that it moved across the sky; it was slow and methodical and it stopped in the sky. It changed shape and it was all different colours.

"When it was above us it was surreal. At that moment in time we were thinking, 'What the hell is it?' It' shaped like your archetypal UFO - namely a saucer with flashing lights underneath it.

"I would have said it was maybe a mile above us.

"I spoke to the police and they told me that nobody else had reported seeing the sighting."

David, who said the sight was "obering and quite startling", added, "We live in a time when we have all open minds to possibilities of life on other planets.

"We see films like Independence Day and Alien and we have got that imagination put into us but when you actually see something that you think you would see in a Hollywood film, actually in our skies, it' a moment that doesn't leave you.

"What we saw was quite remarkable."

Ian and Joyce Munro, from Dunfermline, also spotted what they thought was a "red hot air balloon on fire ascending rapidly northwards near Townhill Road" at around 7.30pm on Sunday.

Ian said, "My wife got her binoculars and my guess is that it was some kind of hot air balloon. You couldn't really tell - it was so dark."

Sounds exactly like a description of a Sky Lantern being launched (Google SkyLantern). They would appear like a glowing orange vertical rectangle at launch and would appear more round or square when overhead. The flashing would be caused by the burning and dripping wax used to heat the lantern.

Is it the magic mushroom picking season? It looks like a sky lantern to me as a previous poster says.

a mile wide? Alcohol abuse is an option.

Not alcohol or magic mushies - clearly acid.

That's what living in Dunfermline will do to you.

Muppets.

Is there a law in Scotland that when filming something, you DO NOT NEED TO HOLD THE CAMERA STILL? It could have been 3 miles wide, and you cant tell a thing because the camera is so jerky.

This is most likely a hoax- and a lousy one at that.

Good for them that they could actually back up their account with video footage. It certainly looks unusual and well worth adding to the list of unknowns.

I have never seen a Chinese lantern move like this (unless its been on the curry!)

Most probably a sky lantern.

Nothing in the video suggests otherwise.

Anyone seriously wishing to film a UFO should invest in a tripod.

I could carry on in this dry manner forever.

I won't.

They have brought great shame on Arthur street.I live here and so do most of Dunfermlines aliens.PS it was obvously a Buckfast related incident. Now i can look forward to busloads of anoraks making a pilgrimage to this "Hotspot". PPS surely any visiting extra terrestials (Lord Vader.)etc Having seen Dunfermline would immediately have done the planet a favour and vapourised it and then head off to ibiza for a couple of weeks clubbing and stuff.

It's sad to see that so many of you pick on people just because they have seen something that no one can identify. Is that the only joy you have in life?

What ever it was im sure that more people saw it, if more people had the courage to report it we might find out what it was. It IS an interesting story.

Me and my neighbour were sitting outside in the back garden (having coffee!) and saw this. We both said at the time noone would believe us. Didn\'t report it for fear of being ridiculed. Looks like I was proved right.......

Like people say its hard to say what it is, BUT on Friday before this was reported my wife and her sister where walking to townhill, at around 8.pm and they have told me they saw a orange object in the sky and jokingly commented to one another that it might be a U.F.O. Why do people who don't know what others have seen, deem it fit to scoff and ridicule them, this just shows the ignorance of certain people. P.S. i'm an outsider in Dunfermline, having lived here for 13yrs, but it has some beautiful areas and places of interest. Why knock your own city.

Because it's the easy thing to do, jim. People who think Dunfermline is a dump are close-minded and ignorant.

However, that is clearly a sky lantern.

rosie goldie - glad there was a logical explanation!!! well, it was a UFO until you explained it! What go to me and my neighbour is that we saw 3 at 10 minute intervals from about 7.30. Does that sound about right? Well spooky as they all seemed to disappear at exactly the same spot in the sky but 10 minutes apart. Thanks for the explanation!!

Well I wish I'd seen it. Many space stories are, infact, observations about us -humanity, and this one's no exception. Someone saw something interesting in the sky and told the world about it. Predictably some others responded with jeers and sarcasm. It would be better for us all if the dullards who attack their own town and the sneering idiots like WeeMidget (is that a name or a description?) Eebo and James did our world a real favour and found some other place to live - like Mars.

So somebody lets off Chinese lanterns and the issue is proved and settled is it?\r\nArthur Street AND DUNFERMLINE are nice places so what\'s Graham doing there.I suggest he heads out immediately to San Antonio and gets \"bluttered\" since this seems to be all he understands. \r\nNow we know why possible sightings go unreported.\r\nThank goodness some people are not desperate to knock Dunfermline or anyone brave enough to stand in the firing line! \r\n\r\n

Well, im not to sure what to believe about this one, however, i think its a bit unfair to start bumping off Dunfermline. Plus Falkirk and Stirling arent the only hotspots, Kirkaldy and Dunfermline have had their fair share, heres a link:D http://www.dunfermlinepress.com/articles/1/24767 hope you enjoy it:)

What with "articles" like this, and the one about the Alhambra 'ghost', and the Blairadam 'ghost', the Dunfermline Press is rapidly turning into a Fife version of the 'National Enquirer' or the 'Fortean Times'. How about some proper journalism for a change?

Cant beleive all the bad comments, are people really that small minded.

Why shouldnt it not be a UFO?

Will i give you all reason to believe:

The majority off stars we see in sky are solar systems just like ours with a sun and planets, some are newer and some are older than ours some maybe dont exist anymore, but we can still see them. Still there are thousands of planets out there probuably millions so there is bound to be other forms of life out there that is more advanced than our own. So why shouldnt there story be true.

Good on you wished i seen it too.

People try and be a bit more open minded and not judgemental.
