Despite challenges in the global recycling markets brought on by the world economic slowdown, Fife’s recycling performance continues to improve.

Figures released by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency show that for the three month period of April to June this year, Fife’s recycling rate was second only to Clackmannanshire. The figures also show that for the year ending June 2008, Fife was one of only five Scottish Councils to recycle and compost more than 40% of its waste.

Commenting on the news, Ross Vettraino, Vice Chair of the Environment, Enterprise and Transportation Committee said “This news is extremely heartening and shows that even in tough market conditions we are continuing to improve. To be the second best performing council for the first three months of this financial year is a great achievement and demonstrates our commitment to become Scotland’s leading green council.”

These figures underline the importance that business and residents in Fife place on their local environment - reflected in the current Dunfermline Press campaign Our Environment Matters.

In parallel the council is running a high profile campaign to encourage householders to recycle even more paper.

Chris Ewing, the council’s Environmental Sustainability Manager added that “Although we recycle nearly 25,000 tonnes of paper per year we know that we could divert over 10,000 tonnes more if we all made full use of the blue bins. Even though trading conditions for waste paper are challenging at the moment it is important that we divert as much as we can from landfill. Please recycle as much paper and other materials as you can to ensure that we continue to be one of the top performing councils”.
