HERE’S an artist’s impression of what Dunfermline’s new £1.7 million indoor sports centre will look like.

The new facility, suitable for a wide range of sports, is on track to be open for use in March.

Designed to complement existing track and field facilities at Pitreavie, the new centre boasts a 60 metres six-lane track with run off, jumps facilities and areas for conditioning and training.

There will also be room for meetings and storage of equipment and the project includes a total revamp of the existing changing facilities and links directly to the new building.

West Fife’s top athletes have welcomed the new facility, with 400m runner Gemma Nicol telling Press Sport this week it would make a big difference to her training. “Definitely. At the moment I’m travelling to the Fife Institute in Glenrothes to do my weights and being able to do that locally would be a lot easier for me,” she explained.

“With the weather like it is in Scotland, it’s much better to be able to train indoors over the winter. It will also be great for doing blocks work when you’re getting into the season.

“If you’re doing that outside and it’s cold, that’s how you can pull muscles.”

However, those behind the centre, which is being built with a £500,000 lottery grant from the sportscotland ‘Building for Sport’ programme, insist it’s not just athletics or top-level competitors who stand to benefit.

Councillor Jim Brennan, arts and leisure spokesman for Fife Council, said, “This indoor track is not just for those who aspire to the Commonwealth Games or Olympics. It is for everyone, young and old, who enjoy taking part in sports activities either competitively or just for enjoyment.”

Scottish Athletics chief Geoff Wightman added, “We are lucky to have local authorities who are progressive in the way they make indoor provision for our athletes but this will bear fruit in the countdown to the Commonwealth Games as well as strengthening athletics at all levels.”
