Dunfermline Rugby Club in action.

Dunfermline 9 Irvine 3

THERE was an air of anticipation on Saturday as, after two hard-fought victories, Dunfermline had their strongest squad to select from.

And, as they were playing one of the weaker sides in the division, there were hopes that they could get the all-important bonus point win.

A sluggish start saw many passes end up on the ground and a dysfunctional line-out failed to give the home team’s attack a good platform, meaning that Irvine did not have to do much to stay in the game.

These errors would continue throughout the first half and the home crowd were alarmed to see no score at half time.

The introduction of Dickinson and Patrick saw an increase in tempo at the start of the second period but again individual errors squandered any continuity, which meant again Irvine were able to soak up any pressure.

In fact, Irvine opened the scoring with one of their short forays into the Dunfermline half when they came away with a penalty.

The home side’s reaction was positive though, and two quick Stevie McColl penalties put them 6-3 up.

A late McColl penalty and strong defence ensured three wins out of three for the Fife side but if promotion is to be a realistic goal this season Dunfermline must surely win games easier than this.
