Stand-in skipper revels in new role

STEVIE CRAWFORD was the most gutted man in Dunfermline when the Pars were relegated but he’s ready to play a captain’s role in securing promotion.

The 33-year-old has put on the armband and led by example in his new position of midfield schemer as the Pars put in back-to-back league victories.

Crawford admitted the football hadn’t been pretty but insisted, “Nothing would give me more pleasure than helping Dunfermline back into the SPL.

“Sometimes you hear that players don’t care but there’s nothing further from the truth as we all want to be playing at as high a level as possible.

“Nobody was more disappointed than me when we got relegated but you can either go away in the summer and cry about it or work hard to put it right. We’ve had a big enough fright now and know what it takes to get the results.”

Crawford took the armband in the absence of Scott Thomson and Greg Shields and said, “It’s great to wear it when you’re representing the club but it doesn’t change your game.

“I’m a talker anyway, I’m not somebody who’s bawling or shouting, and we’ve got a few young boys who’ve come in at a hard enough time without getting on their backs.”

The former Scotland striker’s new role in midfield mean he’s more involved in the game and can pick out defence splitting passes for the forwards.

“Maybe five years ago if he’d asked me to play there I might have been more single minded and said I wanted to play up front but I’m enjoying it, although you only really enjoy it if you’re winning,” Crawford said.

He said the Pars had ground out wins over Partick and Queen of the South and a third league win in a row over Hamilton would cut the gap between them to seven points.

“We’re further back than we’d have liked and it might be a case of grinding out a few more results to get us up there,” he said.
