Gaffer has players’ backing, says Nipper
Scott Thomson.
SCOTT THOMSON has backed Stephen Kenny to turn Pars season around and says they can still win the First Division title.
The club captain, who watched the 5-0 horror show against Hamilton, said axing the under-pressure manager wasn’t the right move.
“It’s far too early for a change and I’m sure the gaffer has the backing of all the other boys as well,” Thomson said.
“Everyone has bad times and I’ve seen it before with other managers.
“Sometimes a change doesn’t need to be made and I just hope we turn this round as quick as possible and climb the league.”
Thomson said he was still around two weeks away from a comeback after an operation on his left knee but was left hurting even more after Saturday’s dismal defeat.
Hamilton now enjoy a 13-point lead over the Pars but the skipper insisted they can still win the league and secure promotion back to the SPL.
“Of course we can,” he stated. “There are plenty of points to play for and other teams will have bad times too.
“We’ve had a bad time and now we have to put a run of results together, as we had been doing until Saturday.”
None of the Pars players wanted to speak about the match and it was left to Thomson to try and explain what went wrong.
He said, “I don’t know what happened.
“Nothing went right for us and every time they went up the park they looked like they were going to score.
“In the last few weeks we’ve been winning 1-0 and we’ve been solid at the back, it was just one of those days.
“We’ve had them before; I remember we played Hearts away and got beat 7-1.”
He also tried to lift the spirits of Sol Bamba, who had a nightmare at the heart of the Pars defence and was culpable for three goals.
Thomson said, “Sol has been one of our best players this season but it just didn’t go for him. It happens.
“As a defender you get games like that, where nothing you try goes right, but you just have to get on with it.
“It’s the same for the strikers. If Hammy or Burchy miss a few chances they probably feel the same way as Sol did after the game. He’ll bounce back.”
Saturday’s defeat leaves the Pars in fifth position but Thomson said, “There has been pressure since the start of the season as everyone felt we were the automatic choice to come straight back up, and rightly so.
“We’ve got a good squad of players and kept the nucleus of an SPL team so there is pressure on us.
“It’s been difficult at times as every team really wants to beat us so they’re sitting in and hitting on the counter attack where with other teams they might have a go at them.
“But we knew that would happen. We’ve just got to sort it out and do it quick.”
