Dunfermline Rugby Club under-15s close in on Murrayfield
DUNFERMLINE Rugby Club’s under-15s moved a step closer to playing at Murrayfield after winning 21-7 at Hawick in the last of their semi-final qualifying pool games in the national under-15 club championship.
The win, combined with victories away at Dumfries and at home to Musselburgh, meant Dunfermline topped Pool A and ensured they will have home advantage in the semi-final against opponents still to be decided.
Dunfermline wingers Gavin Wedge and James McAllister had plenty of opportunities to run at the opposition but it looked as though the first half was going to end in stalemate until lock Tom Stow dived through a massed defence to score the first try following a five-metre scrum.
A fine conversion by stand off Connor Edwards, from wide on the left touchline, gave Dunfermline a 7-0 half-time lead.
The visitors increased their lead early in the second half, centre Keith Buchan breaking through from within Hawick’s 22 to score a well-deserved individual try under the posts. Edwards again converted for a 14-0 lead.
Dunfermline’s superior fitness was beginning to tell and the score became 21-0 when Edwards kicked his third conversion after Scot McCloud crossed the line in the right corner.
Hawick grabbed a consolation try, well converted, after a charge down kick was not cleared.
Dunfermline can now concentrate on the Caledonia under-15 Cup before returning to the national competition in March.
This group of boys have won a lot of tournaments in the minis section as they’ve come up through the ranks and 17 players, out of a squad of 23, have been selected for the Fife under-15 squad, which is the first step on the representative ladder for age group rugby.
