Rugby 15s fall at final hurdle
DUNFERMLINE Rugby Club’s under-15s lost by two penalties in their Scottish National Cup semi-clash against Stirling County at the weekend.
Dunfermline played against a strong headwind in the first half and although both teams shared equal possession, Stirling managed to convert two of their two penalty kicks while Dunfermline missed a penalty kick of their own, the ball just shaving the wrong side of the right-hand upright.
Stirling led 6-0 at the break but Dunfermline came out strongly from the start of the second half and played attractive rugby trying to break down the solid Stirling defence but another chance to pull back three points was lost when a second penalty attempt was missed with the ball struck on target but just short of the uprights.
Dunfermline continued to press hard spending long periods in the opposition’s half but spurned several penalty chances, opting to kick for touch or run the ball when accepting easier penalty kicks may have been the better option.
Poor decision making cost them the game but the team will have learned from this experience and can now look forward to a successful run in the Caledonia Cup.
