Pitreavie runner in superb form at Inter Counties Championships
PITREAVIE AAC’S John Newsom (pictured) was in superb form competing in the senior 12km race for Scotland East at the Inter Counties Championships and World Cross-Country Trials held at Wollaton Park, in Nottingham on Saturday.
With most of Britain’s best cross-country exponents on show, Newsom held his own to finish a fabulous 20th in a time of 38 minutes 25 seconds, placing him second Scot in the race behind US-based Andrew Lemoncello and turning the tables on Mark Pollard, from Inverclyde who beat him at the Scottish Championships.
Newsom, who with coach Chris Robison had been planning their whole winter training and racing plan around this race, seemed to have timed it to perfection, running his best race of the winter when it mattered.
Kathryn Pennel was also competing for Scotland East, in the under-15 girls’ 4km race where she placed 43rd out of 274 athletes in a time of 16:05.
With this being her first year at this age group it was an excellent run against older athletes.
Pitreavie also had three athletes competing for their universities at the British Universities Indoor Championships 2008 at Sheffield.
Stephanie Walker, competing for Edinburgh University, broke the nine-second barrier for the first time in the 60m hurdles and was placed sixth in the final with a time of 8.97 seconds.
Michael Burns and Sean McQueen both competed for Stirling University. Burns ran a new indoor 400m PB of 52.47 seconds while McQueen ran the 200m recording a time of 23.13.
