Dunfermline reach national rugby final

DUNFERMLINE Under 15s progressed through to the finals of the Caledonia Cup competition with a 27-5 win away to Aboyne on Sunday.

Andrew Cain proved to be the hero with a hat-trick but a fine team performance ensured the win despite some slackness at the start.

An early season easy win against this team may have led to some complacency but this was quickly dispelled when the home side showed they were capable of cutting through the Dunfermline defence.

For the first 20 minutes the visitors were pinned in their own half, but during this period Dunfermline had two penalty kicks, both of which missed the uprights.

It was Aboyne that opened the scoring when Dunfermline gave away a number of penalties close to the try line.

Eventually a dive for the line gave the home side a deserved 5-0 lead.

The conversion was missed and so was an easy penalty kick from directly in front of the posts but it seemed that further scores were likely from Aboyne unless Dunfermline forwards started to compete.

At that stage Tom Stow came on as a second row substitute and made an immediate impact.

The forwards started to dominate play and it was two tries, taken just before halftime, by open-side flanker Cain that settled the team.

A conversion by fullback Connor Edwards gave Dunfermline a 12-5 lead at halftime.

The second half saw almost total domination by the Dunfermline forwards with second row Liam Linton and No 8 Connell McGregor particularly effective.

However it was Cain who scored the teams third try and his own personal hat trick.

The conversion was missed but by now the semi-final was secured and was further cemented by a drop goal from Edwards and a fourth try by Clarke Smith that was converted by Keith Buchan.

Dunfermline now meet Aberdeen Grammar in the Caledonia Cup final on 27th April with the venue to be announced.
