PITREAVIE’S Eilidh Child was in record-breaking form at the British University Championships in Bedford over the weekend.

Competing for Edinburgh University, Child, in her first outing of the season over the 400m hurdles, broke the championship record with a time of 58.03 seconds to take the title.

Ryan Oswald competed in the 100m on Saturday for Heriot-Watt University in what were poor sprinting conditions with a strong headwind.

Oswald qualified for the final with 11.16 for second place in his heat followed by 11.15 in the semi-final. In the final he placed seventh in a time of 11.21.

Stacey Downie, also competing in the 100m for Heriot-Watt University, qualified for the semi-finals with 13.0 in her heat into the strongest wind of the day -4.6m/s. She then ran 12.93 in her semi but failed to make the final.

Both Oswald and Downie were back in action in the 200m on the Sunday, with both qualifying comfortably for the semi-finals, held on Monday.

Oswald was third in his heat in 22.47, while Downie was in improved form to win her heat in 25.62. She reached the final after finishing second in her semi in 25.29 and was sixth in the final with a time of 25.52. Oswald didn’t progress beyond the semi-finals after clocking 22.38 to finish seventh.

Dale Carver was the third Pitreavie athlete competing for Heriot-Watt. He was third in his 400m heat which wasn’t good enough to earn him a semi-final place.

Top performance of the day on the track for Pitreavie at Sunday’s Young Athletes League meeting in Grangemouth came from Kathryn Pennel, who ran a perfect race to kick past the leader with 100m to go to win the under-15 girls’ 800m in a time of 2 minutes 21.18 seconds.

In the under-15 boys’ 100m there was a good run from Glenn Murray, who came second in the A string with 12.66 seconds. In the 800m Ewan Dyer also placed second in the A string in 2:12.67 seconds.

In the under-13s Ben Potrykus ran a strong 1500m to finish second in the A string in 5:01.42.
