Rosyth Recreation one game from cup final
By Sports editor Simon Harris
ROSYTH RECREATION bounced back from their 6-1 mauling at home to Newtongrange Star to be one game from a cup final this week.
Last week’s thrashing led to the Recs’ relegation from the Premier League and to new boss Paul Mooney branding the players “a disgrace to the club”.
But a 3-1 victory at home to Scone Thistle on Monday night saw Rosyth through to the semi-finals of the Maloco + associates Cup and brought praise from Mooney.
“I thought the boys were tremendous and that’s just exactly the battling performance I’ve been asking for,” Mooney told Press Sport.
Trialist Mike Brown gave Rosyth the lead before Scone equalised just before half-time.
Ross Morrison missed a great chance for 2-1 when he failed with a penalty but Andy Watt and Craig Morrison made the game safe.
“The team played really well considering we were really short of numbers and I thought we played well against Dundee North End as well at the weekend despite the result.”
Dean Ogg and Craig Morrison again were on target for Rosyth in a 3-2 defeat on Saturday which was a much-improved showing on their previous result.
“We’re looking forward to the semi-final against Thornton Hibs which will be a good one as we’re playing a team we will be up against next year,” Mooney said.
Joining them in the semi-finals are Kelty Hearts, who beat Jeanfield Swifts 3-1 in the quarter-final.
John Martin, Dennis Currie and new signing Tam McGeorge, with his third goal in three games since signing from Rosyth, were all on target and Jambos gaffer Stevie Leighton said, “If we don’t win anything it’s a failure as far as I’m concerned because we are a big club.”
Kelty will now be away to either Glenrothes or Hill of Beath in an all-Super League semi-final and are also in the latter stages of other cup competitions.
Leighton’s men will play Scottish Cup finalists Bathgate at home in the quarter-final of the East of Scotland Cup and take on Super League title favourites Lochee United in the Redwood Leisure Cup semi-final.
Another West Fife side, Crossgates Primrose crashed out of the Maloco + associates quarter-final losing 6-2 at Thornton.
Saturday fixtures: Whyte & Mackay East Super League – Kelty Hearts v Bathgate Thistle. Whyte & Mackay East Premier League – Forfar West End v Rosyth Recreation. Kick-offs 2.30pm.
