Six of the best as Pitreavie runners race for Scotland

PITREAVIE AAC had six athletes called up to the Scotland squad at the annual Loughborough International on Sunday.

Francis Smith, Ryan Oswald (pictured), Jamie Coull, Eilidh Child and sisters Jemma and Stephanie Walker, competed against England, Wales, Loughborough University, GB Juniors and British Universities.

Eilidh Child continued her 100 per cent winning streak this season over the 400m hurdles against Michelle Carey (Loughborough), an athlete who has run sub-57 this season already, and Sian Scott.

Child again proved she is ready to take on anyone with another excellent victory, winning the match race with a time of 58.09 seconds.

She then led off the 4x400m handing over in first place to Claire Gibson, who handed to Kathryn Evans and finally Dunfermline’s Gemma Nicol with the team just losing out in the last few strides to the English team resulting in a second place finish with a time of 3:39.54.

Francis Smith ran a solid 400m hurdles race to place third with a time of 53.38. He also contested the 100m hurdles where he finished fifth in the race and third in the match due to a couple of guest athletes with a time of 14.72.

Stephanie Walker then faced Jessica Ennis, one of Britain’s top prospects for Olympic gold this season over the heptathlon, running as a guest in the 100m hurdles. Walker finished seventh in the race but fifth in the match with a time of 14.77 seconds.

Jamie Coull ran 22.02 in the 200m to place fifth. Ryan Oswald then ran the same distance in the A invitation race and placed fourth with a time of 22.16.

Jemma Walker ran in the 200m B invitation race and was third in a dead heat with a time of 25.45.

Pitreavie’s mens track and field team were fifth in the second match of the Scottish Men’s Athletics League on Saturday at Meadowbank.

Craig Robertson made a welcome return after illness and ran his first 1500m since he was an under-15, running superbly to win the race in a time of 4:00.67.

Michael Burns recorded a new personal best for the 400m hurdles, winning the race in 57.91. He also finished third in the triple jump with 11.92m.

Dale Carver returned to form finishing third in the A 400m in 50.95. Craig Skiffington smashed his personal best winning the B event with 51.98. He also finished second in the B 100m with a time of 11.88 into a -2.6m/s wind.

Paul McCloskey finished third in the 5000m in 15:23 while Stuart Brown was third in the high jump with a jump of 1.80m.

There were wins in both the relays, the 4x100m quartet was Michael Burns, Craig Skiffington, Dale Carver and Steven Hogg and the 4x400m quartet was Craig Robertson, Graeme Lister, Dale Carver and Craig Skiffington.

The club’s ladies finished sixth in their match.

Mhairi Porterfield was in outstanding form, winning the hammer A event with 52.40m and the shot putt A event with 12.08m. She then placed second in the A javelin with 32.67m and third in the A discus with 33.06m.

In the B hammer Caitlyn Mackie won the event with 46.73m. She also won the B shot putt with 10.44m and made it a hat-trick winning the B discus with 29.59m. In the javelin B event Norma Bruce won with a throw of 23.52m.

On the track, Stacey Downie took a double victory with wins in the 100m A with 12.93s into a -2.9m/s wind, then won the 200m with 25.90s into a -2.1m/s wind.

In the under-15 800m, Kathryn Pennel was just edged out of a win by 16 hundredths of a second, finishing second in 2:22.05.

In the A 1500m, Michaela Brown was third with a time of 5:17.65. Kirsten Galbraith smashed her personal best in the long jump finishing second with a leap of 5.25m.

In the under-13 age group, Rachel Easton was second in the 100m A event with a time of 14.27, Louise Russell won the B event with a time of 14.67. Easton then won the 200m A event with a time of 28.82 and Rachel Hunter completed the double for the club over the 200m winning the B event in a time of 30.86.

In the relays, the senior 4x100m quartet of Stacey Downie, Natalie Beattie, Courtney Wilkinson and Lucy Crookston finished second in a time of 51.50.

The under-15 quartet of Kirsten Galbraith, Bethanie Finlayson, Kristy Armstrong and Claire Duncan were also second in a time of 51.00, running quicker than the senior team.

Not to be outdone the under-13 girls quartet of Rachel Easton, Rachel Hunter, Sarah-Jane Easton and Louise Russell also came second in a time of 58.10.
