Eilidh Child

PITREAVIE'S Eilidh Child and Stacey Downie both became British champions at the Norwich Union England Athletics under-23 and under-20 championships (effectively the British Championships for these age groups) at Bedford International Stadium at the weekend.

Child was competing in the under-23 400m hurdles where she qualified through to the final, winning her heat in 58.55 seconds on the Saturday.

The following day she shrugged off windy conditions to control the final from start to finish, crossing the line in 59.18 to take the title, the only athlete in the final who managed to break 60 seconds in the tough conditions.

Downie ran the under-23 200m on the Sunday where she qualified comfortably from her heat with a time of 25.08.

With the wind causing problems over the first 100m it took a gusty effort from Downie to battle through the conditions and take the title in a time of 24.90 and like Child, she was the only athlete to break the barrier, in her case dipping under 25 seconds in the final.

Stephanie Walker was the other under-23 athlete in action and competed in her first championship 400m.

She performed brilliantly qualifying for the final from her heat with a time of 56.59 but inexperience showed in the final with a time of 56.85 and seventh place.

In the under-20 age group Caitlyn Mackie had an interesting series of throws in the hammer. Mackie was well off her best in the first three throws and only scraped into the top eight for the final three throws.

However, she improved before launching a huge final throw of 50.28, which was her first time over the 50m mark and only 14cm short of the Pitreavie club record.

This throw gave Mackie fifth place in the final and underlined her claims to go to the Commonwealth Youth Games in India as her effort was well over the required standard.

Ryan Oswald competed in both the 100 and 200m. His best performance came in the 100m where he ran 10.95 to qualify from his heat then improved to 10.81 in the semi-final to qualify for the final, where he ran 10.86 for fifth place.

In the 200m the conditions caused all sorts of problems for the runners. Oswald ran 22.30 to qualify for the semi-finals where he ran 22.60 – just failing to make the final.

Pitreavie athlete Naomi Fox competed for Fife Schools in the Schools Inter-District championships.

She ran a storming race in the 75m hurdles to smash her personal best and also take victory with a time of 12.00.

She beat Scotland number one Emma Dawson, from Perth, for the first time to break her year-long dominance of the event.
