Pars ready for Austria trip
Jim McIntyre
THE Pars jet out to Austria tomorrow (Friday) to one of football’s hottest summer destinations but it won’t be a holiday for the players.
Jim McIntyre will take a 19-man squad to Obertraun, one of Austria’s national football training centres, for a seven-day training camp.
The base is believed to have been used by the Czech Republic squad ahead of last month’s Euro 2008 finals while Motherwell and English sides Coventry City, Plymouth Argyle and Preston North End will all train there over the summer at some point.
The latter team’s presence may give some of the Pars’ senior stars the chance to catch up with old pal Barry Nicholson, who this week joined the Championship club, but they won’t have long given the training regime drawn up by McIntyre.
“We will be doing two or three sessions some days between games,” Macca told Press Sport.
“We will definitely train on the day of games, which will be played in the afternoon, and on other days we will probably do three sessions; one before breakfast, one in mid-morning and one in the late afternoon.”
The Pars will face Ukrainian and Romanian opposition while in Austria, with matches lined up against FC Metalurh Zaporizhya on Sunday and CFR Timisoara on Wednesday. Last season the Ukrainians finished ninth in the premier league, won by Shakhtar Donetsk, while Timisoara were 13th in Romanian football’s second division.
Looking forward to the trip McIntyre said, “It’s excellent opposition. It’s just a fantastic place to take the players. They will be well impressed when they get there.
“I have been there with Dundee United and Stephen Glass with Hibs. It’s just different class, the facilities are second to none. It will help the boys bond and it’s really important when you go away that there are games so it’s not just constant training.”
