Action from Saturday’s match at Silver Sands as Aberdour (black strip) take on Kyles

ABERDOUR Shinty Club ended their South Division 2 season on a high note on Saturday, recording a first ever victory over Kyles Athletic.

Heavy rain throughout the afternoon made the hard surface slippery but the difficult conditions did not stop the match from being played at a fast pace.

Aberdour made the early breakthrough after 15 minutes when wing forward Alister Shaw’s speed enabled him to latch on to a long through ball, keeping it in play right on the by-line and flicking it back to Doug Newsom, whose shot from 12 yards gave Kyles keeper John Whyte no chance.

Kyles pressed forward from the restart and their patient build-up play created a number of chances to get back on level terms.

Aberdour full backs Tom Bowerman and John MacLachlan blocked several shots and their close marking denied Kyles’ forwards time to settle on the ball.

Wing back Lisa Norman’s reading of the game enabled her to cut off the supply of dangerous balls down Kyles’ left wing, while Fraser Mathisen at wing centre was equally effective patrolling the other flank.

Kyles got their equaliser as the half hour approached, a cross from the left wing evading Aberdour’s backs for once and falling kindly for Chris Blair, who drilled a good shot past Fred Mathisen in the Aberdour goal.

With the scores level, both sides continued to play attacking shinty.

Wing centre Kevin McKell kept up a supply of good quality passes down Aberdour’s right wing and Kyles keeper Whyte had to move sharply to save shots from Newsom and David Rogers, with Amy MacDonald always threatening to snap up any rebounds.

At half-time MacDonald gave way to Joe Dunton, and the big Irishman wasted no time in having a shot on goal, shooting just wide from 20 yards soon after the restart.

The game settled into a series of attacks and counter-attacks but Whyte was the busier of the two keepers, producing a string of excellent saves from Newsom, Dunton and Rogers.

Ruairidh Reid came on for McKell with half an hour left, coinciding with a period of intense pressure from the visitors.

Kyles veteran half forward Tom Whyte posed a threat whenever he got the ball, although Aberdour’s Ross Nicol used his speed to take off on some long runs down the left wing, dragging Whyte with him and was unlucky to shoot wide at the culmination of one of them.

Aberdour captain Andy Mathie’s speed enabled him to intercept several passes in midfield and create chances for his forwards and as the game entered its final stages Kyles were increasingly opting for the long ball out of defence.

With 10 minutes left, McKenzie came close to giving Kyles the lead when he shot just inches wide of the post. Five minutes later a shot from John Blair looked to be heading for the top corner of the Aberdour net but Mathisen deflected it wide.

The game had entered the 90th minute when Alister Shaw turned his marker and unselfishly passed to David Rogers, whose shot beat Whyte and gave Aberdour both points.

Aberdour’s next game will be at Glenorchy on 9th August.
