CRACKER: Andy Kirk fires in his first goal on Saturday

ANDY KIRK’S double on his home debut will live long in the memory of those there to see it – but not for one special fan.

Kirk’s wife, Karen, was in the stands to cheer hubby Andy on – but had nipped out for a cuppa when he blasted his first goal past former Pars keeper Bryn Halliwell.

“Really? That wouldn’t be like her,” Kirk grinned when told afterwards that his wife had missed his first goal at East End Park.

“I’ll explain it to her anyway. She will be happy enough that we won.”

The couple are currently in a hotel while they go house-hunting with parents back in Belfast babysitting the kids.

The former Hearts striker leaped at the chance to return to Scottish football when Yeovil could no longer afford to keep him after loving his time at Tynecastle.

And he’s hoping that his fledgling partnership with fellow new boy Graham Bayne could be as productive as when he hooked up with Mark De Vries for Craig Levein’s Jambos.

Kirk’s second strike – witnessed by Karen – came after Bayne had headed the ball down to him and he said, “It looks promising up to now.

“Graham has maybe not got his goal in the first couple of games but it’s the work he does bringing other people into the game.

“He does things in the game I can’t do and vice-versa and we are a good partnership for each other.

“He is a good player and hopefully, we can hit it off together and have a really good season.”

Kirk admitted that his goals – both from outside the penalty area – were collectors’ items.

“Most of my goals come from within the box so it’s very rare. Maybe it’s something that will start to develop in my game.

“It just opened up for me when Alex Burke gave me the ball. I turned and moved into space, still no-one shut me down and I just thought, why not? I hit it quite well and it went into the bottom corner.

“For the second goal they let me turn so easily and I just thought that if I kept it down and went for a corner I’d have a chance.”

Kirk said he had been “very impressed” by his team mates in his first week at the club.

“Training has been very good, the standard has been good. There are some good players here.

“I watched most of the opening game against Partick from the bench and I was very impressed by the way they got the ball down and passed it. The boys looked fit and sharp.

“The boys maybe felt a bit tired in the first half on Saturday. We just didn’t click. The manager gave us a bollocking at half time and rightly so. We got our distances all wrong, we defended too deep and the gap was too big between us and midfield.

“We sorted that out in the second half, pushed up and got tight so that instead of hitting 30 or 40 yard passes, it was 10 or 15-yard passes, which makes the game a lot easier.”
