Shedden puts in the hours ahead of Knockhill race
WEST FIFE race ace Gordon Shedden got some extra practice for this Sunday’s Touring Car event at Knockhill last week – by competing in a 24-hour race.
The 29-year-old racer, from Dalgety Bay, took part in the 24 Hours of Spa race on the Belgian Grand Prix track of Spa-Francorchamps.
“I had the opportunity to go and do that in a Ferrari 430 GT, which was mega,” he told Press Sport. “There was four of us sharing the car and it ended up being quite hectic. It’s a massive circuit and it takes a hell of a lot of getting used to.”
The Spa is one of the toughest 24-hour races next to Le Mans and Shedden said it was more than just the track he had to contend with.
“It’s up in the mountains and notoriously has its own weather systems,” he explained.
“You’ll find you’re doing 170 mph and it’s dry and then 50 yards along the road it’s properly wet and then another few hundred yards along it’s dry again.
“We finished fourth in the GT2 class so it was good, really good.”
He hasn’t ruled out taking part in other similar events in the future.
“To get my first 24-hour race out of the way is great and who knows, it could open up the possibility of Le Mans in the future so that would be awesome,” he said.
Shedden is now looking forward to racing on home turf and hopes to continue the good form that saw him claim success at the last event held at Oulton Park, Cheshire.
“I don’t see it so much as a home advantage but it’s just great to sleep in your own bed at night and the support that the Scottish crowd gives is phenomenal.
“I can’t wait and hopefully I will give the crowd something to cheer about,” he enthused. “It will be a great family atmosphere with lots going on.”
