Carnegie swimmer claims national record at British finals
Mark Szaranek
TWO members of Carnegie Swimming Club’s junior performance squad excelled at Ponds Forge swimming pool in Sheffield last week breaking a host of personal best times and a Scottish national age group record.
Twelve-year-olds Mark Szaranek and Craig Bowman reached nine British finals from ten swims and returned home with a handful of medals.
The duo performed brilliantly over the four days of gruelling competition against the top British swimmers in their age group with one highlight being both boys competing in the final of the 100m backstroke after swimming personal best times in the morning heats.
Szaranek won the bronze medal finishing third in a personal best time of 1:08.02 and Bowman smashed his best time to finish just outside the medal positions in fourth in a time of 1:08.81.
The boys also swam well in the morning heats of the 200m backstroke with both of them again swimming PB times. Bowman just missed out on the final places with a PB time of 2:31.72 but Szaranek went on to take the silver medal in the final in a new PB time of 2:24.04.
Szaranek then went on to qualify for a further six finals in which he won another four medals. He took silver in the 200m freestyle final in a Scottish age group record time of 2:07.83 and bronze in the final of the 100m freestyle in a PB time of 58.52. He then won a bronze in the 200m individual medley final in a PB time of 2:26.25 and rounded off his medal haul with a bronze in the 400m freestyle final with another PB time of 4:26.83.
He also qualified for the finals of the 100m and 200m butterfly, where he again clocked PBs, finishing sixth and seventh respectively in times of 1:05.85 and 2:28.01.
A club spokesman said, “Everyone at Carnegie is incredibly proud of both Mark and Craig for what they have achieved at these championships and the quality and effort shown by the boys is a testament to their fitness and commitment to training under their coach, Dougie Hopkins.”
