More than 300 finish Forth Road Bridge race

MORE than 300 runners crossed the finishing line on Sunday morning in the Forth Road Bridge Pitreavie 10K race.
One of the most popular races on the Scottish running calendar, the race starts in North Queensferry before heading down towards Ferrytoll and over the Eastern walkway of the Forth Road Bridge. Upon reaching the south side the runners complete a loop around the FETA complex before heading under the bridge emerging on the upstream side to start the return back to the north side. The race finishes at the northern end of the bridge.
The men’s race was largely a one-man affair after Carnegie Harriers’ David Simpson broke clear early on and was nearly 400 metres clear by the 3K mark. Simpson went on to finish in 31:40, the second best finishing time in the event’s history, and more than two minutes clear of the next runner. Runner-up spot went to Simpson’s club mate Scott Bradley, who clocked 33:55, before Pitreavie’s Paul McCloskey clocked a fast 34:08 to finish third.
The women’s race was slightly closer with only 90 seconds between the first three women. Carnegie Harrier Ros Alexander was first female back in a finishing time of 39:14, Pitreavie’s Jayne Clark went one place better than in 2007 to finish strongly in second place in 49:09 with Carnegie’s Kate McKinnon holding on to finish third in 40:49.
Carnegie Harrier Dennis Howett won the M40+ category, finishing sixth overall in 35:12. In the F35+ category, Pitreavie’s Alison Whyte finished 37th overall in 41:40 with Carnegie’s Fabienne Thompson second in 42:35.
In the M50+ category Carnegie’s Ian Stewart was fifth overall taking the title in 34:56. Ian Johnston, also Carnegie, was second in 37:57.
Both male and female team prizes this year went to Carnegie Harriers with David Simpson, Scott Bradley and Ian Stewart the three counters. The ladies’ counters were Ros Alexander, Kate McKinnon and Fabienne Thompson.
Other Pitreavie times from Sunday include Ewan Simpson, eighth in 35:55, Steve Skene 22nd in 39:38, Alison Whyte 37th and fourth female in 41:40, Richard LeGood, second male junior in 44:39 and Louise Dallas 48:03.
