Dalgety Bay golfer swaps local greens for Silver City
A DALGETY BAY golfer is performing above par in the USA.
Keen amateur Scott Crichton (20) recently returned to start his third year of a golf scholarship at the Western New Mexico University.
And he heads west on a high after winning several Scottish amateur tournaments, including the Aberdour championship, where he is a member.
The former Inverkeithing High pupil is in the third year of a Cell and Molecular Biology degree as he works towards a sports science qualification.
Dad Jimmy (52), Hillside Avenue, said, “He’s having a great time out there because conditions for golf are ideal in Silver City, where he stays – it hardly ever rains.
“He came back at the beginning of May and won tournaments at Canmore and Thornton.
“But he’s happy to be club champion at Aberdour because he has been a member there since he was 11-years-old.”
Scott managed to defeat existing champion Stuart Meiklejohn in the four-round competition.
He finished 10 strokes ahead, completing 72 holes in an impressive 273.
Jimmy added, “He’s constantly setting targets for himself, and is hoping to knock four off his handicap.
“Hopefully the training he receives in America will help him achieve this.
“He’s obviously mad on golf but has to take his studies seriously too, and he managed to do very well last term.”
Back in the USA, Scott will continue to compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, challenging other talented golfers from places such as Colorado and Nebraska.
One of last year’s highlights was his victory in the NCAA Northwest Regional Championship.
His 74.45 scoring average in the 2007-08 season was the second best mark in the university’s history.
