Oakley boss still looking to strengthen
OAKLEY boss John Allison warned his promotion challengers ‘Don’t make me take your place’ after admitting he’s not hung up his boots yet.
The new gaffer at Blairwood Park played down his team’s chances of storming back to the Super League and said he’d rather watch than play.
Allison said, “I’m still thinking about playing but I’ve told the boys I’m giving them a chance to keep me on the sidelines.
“It’s up to them. I’m looking to add experience as we’re still a bit short and I’m talking to a couple of people just now.”
After a great win against Hill of Beath in his first game, Oakley lost to Rosyth and on Saturday Crossgates beat them 2-0 in the ACA Sports Central League Cup.
And he explained, “We had a couple of bad results but we actually played not too bad.
“We’re creating chances but not taking them and we need more consistency.
“I’ve added around 10 players, including youngsters coming through and learning the game, so to be honest we’ve been using the league cup to get them used to each other.”
Oakley start their East Region Premier League campaign away to Kinnoull on Saturday.
Allison said, “With the players we lost, and last season too, I don’t think we’ve replaced them yet so I wouldn’t say we’re favourites, definitely not.
“We’ve not got the money that other teams have but we’ll be trying to bring boys on and build.”
Kelty boss Stevie Leighton will be tempted to confiscate Craig Morrison’s passport ahead of the striker’s holiday next month after an astonishing goal spree.
The hot shot has bagged 10 goals in just three matches, including a treble against Lochore when the Hearts boss didn’t rate his performance!
Leighton said, “He actually had a poor game against them and he still scored a hat-trick, everything he’s touched has gone in the net.”
Morrison also hit a treble in the match against Ballingry on Saturday – Kelty won 5-1 – and four against Dundonald, all in the league cup.
Rosyth beat Steelend 6-2 in the same competition.
Hearts hope he doesn’t run dry before the East Region Super League kicks off on Saturday when they take on Tayport at home.
Leighton said, “The good thing is Craig’s done it at Super League level but we’ve got four good strikers with different styles so we’re hoping they’ll all contribute.
“Home form is going to be important for us. There are places, like Linlithgow, where it’s a bit intimidating and some teams feel beaten before they get there, that’s what we’d like to instil here.”
Kelty were due to face Glenrothes in the league cup semi-final last night (Wednesday).
Saturday fixtures: East Region Super League – Kelty Hearts v Tayport. East Region Premier League – Kinnoull v Oakley United. East Region Central League – Thornton Hibs v Steelend Vics, Jeanfield Swifts v Crossgates Primrose.
