Dunfermline off to a winning start
Irvine 27 Dunfermline 39
DUNFERMLINE Rugby Club started the new league campaign with an impressive victory in Irvine on Saturday.
The away 15 were short of a number of players due to unavailability and were forced to rely upon a young squad to get the result.
Dunfermline started well, with late replacement Andy Brown (pictured) storming over the try line inside five minutes after good work from the forwards and Ali O’Connor added the extras.
As Dunfermline mounted their next attack an unfortunate knock on led to an interception that saw Irvine race away for the equalising score.
Undeterred, the young side continued to attack with purpose and were rewarded with another Brown finish to take a 12-7 lead.
Shortly after, a well-worked backs move saw Glenn Gibson run in for his first touchdown of the new season with O’Connor again adding the extras.
Next in this helter skelter first half was another Irvine score which was made easy through some terrible Dunfermline tackling.
Again Dunfermline bounced back and scored their bonus point try just before half-time. O’Connor produced a bit of individual magic to beat the defence and race in under the posts and was able to convert his own score.
Just on half-time Irvine came back again and scored their first try to take the half-time score to 26-20.
The second half was a little less frenetic as error after error allowed the home side to keep the score down.
After an early O’Connor penalty Dunfermline ran in two more scores through Ross Gribbons and O’Connor’s second try to take them clear of the home side, who replied late on with their fourth try.
Dunfermline now face newly-promoted Garnock at home this weekend and with a potentially stronger squad to pick from will be looking to back up this great start to the season.
