TWELVE hardy souls took a dip in the Forth on Saturday as they took part in the annual River Forth Swim.
Starting from South Queensferry pier, they were escorted throughout their 1.4 mile swim to North Queensferry by canoes manned by members of the Fife Sea Kayak Club and the rescue boat of the Scottish Swimming Association.
First ashore and junior men’s winner was 13-year-old Aaron Sievewright, from Fauldhouse, in a time of 29mins 58secs followed closely by West Fife athlete Donald Griffiths (15), from InCAS, in 30:25.
Junior girls’ winner was Mhari Johnston, from Haddington, in 31:51. The youngest swimmer ever to take place in this tough event was 11-year-old Autumn Farrell, who gained third spot in 35:52.
Senior men’s winner was Greig Henderson, from Aberdeen’s Silver City Blues, in 31:40 with Edinburgh Warrender’s Alex Pitcher second in 33:36.
Seonaid Hudson, from Silver City, took the senior ladies’ award in 36:09 from event organiser Andrea Gellan in 37:25.
Presentations were made by Dunfermline & West Fife Sports Council chairman Councillor Douglas Chapman and the event was part of the opening day’s activities of the annual Sport For All Festival staged by the sports council which, this year, is supported by the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust, Fife Council and the Fife Sports and Leisure Trust.
The eight-day festival, which runs until Sunday, features a packed programme of courses, competitions, displays and ‘come and try’ events in sports as diverse as hockey, swimming, tennis, golf, bowls, pool, water polo, volleyball, football, athletics, fencing and many more.
