Village shinty on the rise
Lisa Norman
ABERDOUR Shinty Club’s senior team wrapped up its south Division 2 campaign with three consecutive trips to Argyll.
The visit to Taynuilt ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat, the loss of two quick goals proving decisive in a match which Aberdour dominated.
The away game at Col Glen turned into a 14-goal thriller.
Aberdour scored twice in the first 15 minutes, and held the lead four times during the game, but two late goals from Col Glen saw the home side emerge 8-6 winners.
Aberdour could only muster 11 players for the final game of the season, but still managed to keep Glenorchy at bay for 40 minutes before conceding a goal.
The match ended 4-1 to Glenorchy.
With five wins this season, head coach Lisa Norman said they’ve shown they can compete with any team in the league.
She added, “The senior team has really competed in the league this year and we have now got a good strong set of players. They have excelled themselves.”
This Saturday, Aberdour’s Under 14 side travel to Fort William for a national cup final.
Aberdour will take on Strathglass in the Scottish Hydro Electric Development Trophy.
Norman said, “We’ve had some really good teams in the past few years and this is a great crop of players who have been playing together since they were five and six.
“I’m quite hopeful for them and a lot of them are already playing in the under-17s.”
Four players have been selected for the south under-14 team in the North v South match in October.
In addition, two have been selected for the same fixture for the under-17s.
