Aberdour Shinty club wins Scotland development cup final
Aberdour youngsters (in white) join their Irish counterparts on the club's tour of Ireland.
ABERDOUR Shinty Club’s under-14s have won the National Development Cup final.
A competition for smaller clubs with nine-a-side teams, Aberdour qualified as top team in the south of Scotland to meet Strathglass, the top small club in the north.
The match was played in Fort William before the Camanachd final, where Fort William beat Kingussie 2-1.
Aberdour started the match strongly, pinning Strathglass back for the opening 10 minutes, but were then stung when the opposition scored on the break to go 1-0 up.
That put the West Fifers on the backfoot but Callum Doig came on and had an immediate impact, equalising before Cameron McCue scored with a fine strike from just over the halfway line to give Aberdour a 2-1 half-time lead.
In the second half, Aberdour pushed for a decisive third goal which came eventually from Doig.
With Aberdour now on top, captain Lewis Nicol scored to make it 4-1 before Daniel Neilson added a touch of gloss with a fifth Aberdour goal.
It’s a fantastic achievement for a club from a corner of Fife where shinty is not played traditionally and it’s been recognised with several Scotland call-ups for Aberdour players.
Nicol, McCue, Craig Grant and Conor McPherson have been selected for the under-14 South of Scotland squad to face their northern counterparts on Sunday, while Aberdour’s Alister Shaw and Alasdair Hutt have made the under-17 south squad also playing the north on the same day.
Katy Smith and Lisa Norman, who play for Aberdour’s senior side as well as their respective women’s clubs, both represented the south when beating the north 4-3 in August and will now represent Scotland at women’s shinty in the Camogie international on 18th October in Kilkenny.
More than 30 of the club’s players aged nine to 14 travelled to County Sligo in Ireland last month to play an international compromised rules game of shinty/hurling.
Three Aberdour teams of under-10s, 12s and 14s travlled to Ireland to play two Irish clubs recently.
All three teams beat Geevagh National School on the Saturday while Aberdour’s under-12s beat the county champions the following day by several goals.
The under-10s were beaten but the under-14s, buoyed by their national cup win, were victorious against a strong Irish team.
