KELTY boss Stevie Leighton hopes to sign the midfield steel that will bolster his Hearts squad this week.
Leighton has made no secret of his desire to stiffen up his squad with a midfield general that can provide grit to balance his side’s obvious attacking finesse following an indifferent start to the season.
The manager had virtually got his man this week although the new player won’t be fit to go straight into the side at home to Whitburn this Saturday as he is currently injured.
Ironically, it was a gritty 1-0 victory at Bathgate last weekend which helped a delighted Leighton ram a few words down his critics’ throats.
Despite travelling to West Lothian with a squad of just 13 fit players, including two goalkeepers, Kelty came away with the victory thanks to a winner from Conrad Courts.
“It’s been testing times,” Leighton admitted.
“Everyone has been knocking us and my job has been questioned although I’ve had backing from the club.
“Naturally, people are a bit vindictive when things are not going well – you find out who your friends are.
"We have always been confident in our own ability at the club, it’s just a case of getting the right balance.
"The way we applied ourselves was first class and we contained them really well.
“We showed great fighting spirit and, after watching the video of the Thornton game, it looks like the players have taken responsibility for the result and have rectified it.
"Hopefully, we can continue that with another huge game this weekend at home to Whitburn.”
"Rosyth went top of the East Region Central League with a narrow 4-2 victory over West Fife rivals Steelend Victoria.
Darren Seath had given Vics the lead and it was only a controversial penalty, scored by Charlie Scarborough right on half-time, that brought Recs back into the game.
Two goals from Allan McDonough gave Rosyth a 3-1 lead in the second half but that was brought back to 3-2 by Alan Kirkwood.
Czech striker Andrej Koc made the game safe for Rosyth with a late goal.
“Steelend deserve more praise than we do,” was Rosyth co-boss Jock Lumsden’s honest assessment after the game.
“We played better last week in losing 3-0 in the Scottish Cup at Beith but we’re pleased to have taken three points when we have not played as well as we can.
“If someone had to said to me and (joint manager) Paul Mooney that we would be sitting top after six games we would have been happy.”
New Oakley boss Stevie Kay was “gutted” after his Oakley side lost to a late goal at home to promotion-chasing Penicuik.
That result leaves Oakley bottom of the Premier League and Kay said, “You never get the breaks when you are down at the bottom.
"We need to be a bit more ruthless in front of goals and a bit more streetwise at the back.”
Saturday’s fixtures: East Region Super League – Kelty Hearts v Whitburn. East Region Premier League – Musselburgh Athletic v Oakley United. East Region Central League – Lochgelly Albert v Rosyth Recreation, Steelend Victoria v Kirkcaldy YM. (Kick offs 2pm).
