TALENTED Abbeyview teenager Callum Crossan has won his third national bowling title – at just 14.

The young Abbeyview Bowling Club member defeated Portobello’s Daniel Gormley – two years his senior – in a thrilling tie-break to win the Scottish Young Masters title in Perth on Friday.

Screened by the BBC, the final saw Callum score a treble to win the first set 7-6 but lost the second 8-2 before recovering to take the title with a 2-1 tie-break win.

Callum has now added the Masters trophy to the Scottish under-16 outdoor pairs title he won with David Smith in 2006 and the indoor under-16s Scottish triples he won in March with Ryan Kerr and Jonathan Duff.

Abbeyview Bowling Club secretary Stuart Roxburgh told Press Sport, “Callum’s been bowling since he was seven or eight and he’s known everywhere he goes because he’s that wee.

“He shows a lot of potential and he’s begun to understand the game better in the last couple of years.

“He helps other youngsters play the game and he’s been skipping our juniors team at under-17 level in the East of Scotland junior indoor league, which is unusual.”

Callum was interviewed afterwards by the BBC’s Dougie Vipond, who told him he appeared to have no nerves, to which the youngster replied, “There’s plenty inside.”

Roxburgh added, “He’s a brilliant wee lad.

"His dad brought him up to the club on Saturday night and he went round with the cup. There were about 60 people from the club who went to watch him at Perth.

“We have another two youngsters, Jason Brand and Allan Ramsay, taking part in international trials at Abbeyview this weekend for the under-25 team.”

Gran Janet Crossan said, “I went to Perth but I couldn’t watch.

"I had to go out as I was going to be sick. I have never watched him when he’s playing but as long as he knows I’m there, that’s the important thing.

“He first started coming with his grandad and me when he was five. His grandad would put the mats out and he’d bowl the jack.”
