Irish EU 'No' vote was a disappointment not a disaster
THE European Union will still function after the Irish “no” vote referendum. The result is a disappointment but not a disaster.
However, the loss of the Lisbon Treaty means that national parliaments will not get the power to reject EU proposals before they come to the European Parliament, that children’s rights will not be incorporated for the first time into the treaties (currently animals have more rights than people), and that we will lose the citizens’ right of initiative.
This is deeply disappointing for those who believe in a progressive Europe.
Although the EU will still function, it will only have the tools of yesterday to fight the battles of tomorrow.
