Wind of change is blowing in politics
THE Nationalists had 1000 volunteers helping out in Glasgow East on the last weekend prior to the by-election there was 500-foot soldiers chasing votes and helping out in any way they could.
And lets be clear, these people were not young teenagers out for a day’s jolly or students experimenting with politics, the greatest majority were mature, working people between 25 and 35 willing to give up their evenings and weekends for the SNP. When Labour saw the grass root support the SNP could muster they withdrew their support for a referendum on independence.
All parties at the Glasgow East by-election must have come to realise which way the wind is blowing. Those that are sensible will know they cannot hold back the tide of change and the status quo is no longer an option. Unfortunately, I have no doubt that Labour will stick its head in the sand, after all their MPs have the most to lose.
The younger generation do not fear independence. They know there is still a much oil in the North Sea as has been taken out. They know that Scotland with its long shoreline and its wind and tidal power has the potential to be to renewable energy what Saudi Arabia is to oil. They know the Norwegians will never be poor thanks to the trust fund set up by their government, while our own people such as those in Glasgow East have the worst life expectancy in Europe.
They will not sit back and watch our nation’s wealth flow into the London treasury to be spent on wars and nuclear weapons while our own government struggles to find the funding to invest in our infrastructure and places like Glasgow East.
We know the wealth Scotland has and can have in the future so threatening to cut our subsidies or cut our income from the Barnett Formula is a farcical nonsense and shows how out of touch Westminster politicians are with Scottish politics.
Hopefully, Glasgow East will concentrate the minds of politicians and those who are sensible will realise that change is inevitable and the sooner we get on with it the better for all concerned.
