Homeless can be rehabilitated

Comment Bubble Comments (0) Printer Print Article

REGARDING the James Bank Hostel, history is repeating itself, I feel.

I was homeless 15 years ago and had a room in Bute Crescent homeless unit. Local residents wanted the facility closed down because of anti-social behaviour. At the time I wrote to the Press about my own personal victimisation.

I now live in Edinburgh and work with the homeless and people with mental health issues. Just because a person is homeless doesn’t make them addicts or anti-social. A lot of people just want to get their life back on track. Now that there is very little social housing available, there is no choice but to live in a hostel.

As for relocating James Bank, it wouldn’t matter where it moved to, someone would object to its presence.

Homelessness can happen to anyone, and rehabilitation is possible, I am proof positive of this.
