Woodmill High pupil secures Scottish Youth Theatre place
By Ally McRoberts
THERE was drama for a Woodmill High pupil who was accepted onto a prestigious National Youth Theatre (YT) course in London for which she hadn’t meant to apply.
The likes of Sir Ben Kingsley, Dame Helen Mirren and Little Britain’s David Walliams and Matt Lucas first flourished with the NYT – and Kimberley Bowman (16) was set to follow.
The fifth-year pupil was advised by her drama teacher to apply for the Scottish Youth Theatre but Kimberley, of Queen Margaret Gardens, said, “I auditioned for the National Youth Theatre by mistake as the websites looked similar.
“I went to a big workshop at Craiglockhart, they put us in groups for drama games and then I was called in to do my audition piece.”
She performed a monologue from ‘When I was a girl I used to scream and shout’ but also auditioned for the Scottish Youth Theatre (SYT).
Kimberley, who caught the acting bug aged nine, faced a dilemma when she was also accepted for their summer festival course – a five-week residential in Glasgow.
Concerned that her studies could suffer, Kimberley chose to hone her theatrical talents closer to home rather than amongst the bright lights of London.
“I’m going to the SYT in Glasgow,” she confirmed. “I’ll stay in the halls of residence, we’ll go to theatres every day and we’ll be staging a production at the end.”
There will be three productions with ‘Oh what a lovely war’, ‘Geordie’ and a piece they’ll have to devise themselves, ‘Hero’, included in the summer programme.
The course could, as it did for TV ’tecs Blythe Duff and Colin McCredie, open the door to the staple of every Scots actor, a part in Taggart, but other opportunities should follow.
Top actors such as Gerard Butler, Dougie Henshall and Siobhan Redmond started out with the SYT.
Kimberley’s unsure of her path and said, “I really do like acting but it’s a hard profession to get into.
“I enjoy drama at school and I’d like to do something with it in future, maybe scriptwriting as I like writing and being creative, or even a drama teacher.”
Kimberley is currently part of a Carnegie College Stage School and Youth Theatre Fife double bill which is on at Carnegie Hall tomorrow (Friday).
