WEST FIFERS will be able to take a step back in time this summer with three of Scotland’s most famous figures.

Robert the Bruce, Queen Margaret, William Wallace, monks and witches will be at Abbot House throughout July and August to entertain visitors with their stories.

Visitors to the upstairs galleries of Abbot House will be able to receive a certificate marking their visit and there will be chain mail, swords and helmets for youngsters to try on as they receive their knighthood from Robert the Bruce.

The events are part of the “Living History at Abbot House” programme, which aims to raise the profile of the historic building and Dunfermline.

Abbot House manager Ann Steedman said, “It’s the first time we’ve done it. We had a trial weekend back in April with drama students from Carnegie College doing re-enactments and it was a huge success.

“We decided to feature major figures that are closely linked to Dunfermline. The most important in our mind was King Robert the Bruce who is buried in the Abbey. He is also arguably the one most likely to appeal to a greater number of visitors.”

She added, “The mother of William Wallace is buried a few yards from Abbot House in the church graveyard, which gives a good connection with another of Scotland’s heroes. We have a St Margaret Room in Abbot House so it was a popular choice to feature her as well.

“Many people argue that Margaret and Malcolm Canmore do not get as high a profile as they perhaps deserve and we hope that by featuring Queen Margaret in this ‘Living History’ project, this will go some way to addressing those concerns and help raise awareness of the important role she played in Dunfermline’s history.”

The event has been made possible by the Small Grants Scheme, Fife Council and the Muir Group.

Robert the Bruce and William Wallace made their appearance yesterday (Wednesday) and will be at Abbot House until 27th July. Robert the Bruce and Queen Margaret will be appearing from 30th July to 17th August.

The actors will be at Abbot House from 10am to 4pm from Wednesday to Sunday. Admission costs £4 for adults (£3 concession) and accompanied children go free.
