Boost for Culross Festival funding
By Ally McRoberts
CULTURAL CULROSS: Publicising next month’s Culross Festival are committee members Russell Boyce and Roy McCormack, ScotAsh sales and quality manager Chris Bennett and committee members David Ewles and Derek Burns.
CULROSS FESTIVAL bursts into life next month with a three-day offering including opera, a jazz and blues night and the ever-popular medieval fair.
Three bands kick off the jazz and blues night in the gardens of Lord Bruce’s home, Abbey House, on Friday 1st August with Lights Out By Nine supported by The Deal and the Falcons.
Tickets cost £10 and doors open at 6pm for a 6.30pm start.
The gardens will also host Puccini’s moving opera, Madama Butterfly, the following day and it will be performed by Welsh production company Opera Box.
The performance begins at 4pm but the gardens will be open to concert-goers for picnics from 2pm.
Tickets cost £20 for adults, £5 for 12 to 18-year-olds and under 12s go free when accompanied by an adult.
And on Sunday 3rd August the three-day programme culminates in the Culross Medieval Burgh Fair, which takes place at the village green from noon with free admission.
Attractions such as traditional music and dancing, re-enactment groups, birds of prey and craft stalls will ensure the event is a great day out for the family.
The performance of Madama Butterfly has been sponsored by ScotAsh, who are based at nearby Longannet Power Station.
The company, which recently won a second Queen’s Award for enterprise for its environmentally friendly cements, is involved with the festival for the first time.
Roy McCormack, chairman of the Culross Festival, said, “It has always been our ambition to make the festival bigger and better.
“Having ScotAsh on board as a sponsor for the 2008 event will allow us to take the first steps towards making that happen.”
He added, “We have a tremendous line-up this year over the three days with something for everyone, from children and families to jazz and blues fans and opera lovers.
“It’s a diverse programme, it’s happening locally and tickets for the Abbey House events can be booked online.”
Chris Bennett, of ScotAsh, said, “ScotAsh is delighted to support the Culross Festival, which provides access to the arts and high-quality entertainment for hundreds of local people.
“The event also attracts many visitors from outside the area and in doing so boosts the local economy, so we’re very pleased to be involved this year for the first time.”
