DESPITE only forming a couple of months ago, and being without a record deal, West Fife band The Alchonauts have already become a hit in America.
The four-piece group from Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay are taking part in the Youth Music Initiative (YMI) at Rosyth’s Sub Station recording studio.
They are getting the chance to record a demo in the studio with professional engineers which will then be sent to record companies for feedback.
And, although they are yet to cut their CD, some of the band’s home-made demos have already made it onto the internet.
That’s led to a growing number of fans, who are keenly awaiting the band’s forthcoming CD.
“We’ve already got some interest in America,” said singer and guitarist Theo Watson (18). “We’ve even ended up on an internet chart there.”
His fellow band members are Greig Connolly (18) on bass and vocals, Scott ‘Heman’ McColl (16) on drums and Andrew ‘AJ’ Johnstone (18) on keyboards.
The guys have been jamming together for some years now but only decided to form the band when they heard about the YMI earlier this year.
Describing themselves as pop but with “some punk influence”, the group had not even held a proper practice before their first session in the studio last week.
But Theo thinks that, with the help of Sub Station, the sky’s the limit for The Alchonauts.
“We hope it will be our big break,” he enthused. “When we started, we weren’t very good because we had not really played as a band before.
“We were thrown in the deep end!”
However, he described the song they are recording, Kiss Me, as “amazing” and the group are now planning some gigs in and around West Fife.
Sub Station boss and organiser of the YMI, Mick Brennan, said it was The Alchonauts’ varied sound that had won them the place on the programme.
“They’re not your standard band,” he said.
“It seems that their influences are wide-ranging, which makes them quite different.”
