THE AUTOMATIC – Steve McQueen
In 1985 Steve McQueen was the name of a great album by County Durham via Albuquerque-tastic popstars Prefab Sprout. In 2008 Steve McQueen is the name of a nondescript single by Welsh 'Monster' rawkers The Automatic. As I write, this tune is competing with the luring chimes of the early evening ice cream van, and there can only be one winner. When it gets to the stage that you're being out rocked by a mobile confectionary vendor who's been playing the same tune for the last twenty-odd years, there's something awfully wrong. (And for the record, the chorus to Prefab Sprout's King of Rock n Roll is, 'Hot dog/jumping frog/Albuquerque' – everyone should know that.)

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK - Summertime
Every girl in Primary 6 wanted to marry Joey from NKOTB leading to feelings of panic and rejection from me and my male classmates, at least 'til the first bell. But I harbour no grudge – not when they're producing stuff of this calibre. The American mavericks have still got it and show a fair amount of derring-do by releasing a song called Summertime as we slowly approach the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. Now it's just up to Hepburn to get it back together and relive the magic too. About bloody time.

KINGS OF LEON – Sex On Fire
Sex on Fire is possibly about the mighty burn of gonorrhoea which these days can be easily overcome with a series of antibiotics called cephalosporins. This is the first offering from their forthcoming, and fourth, studio album Only By The Night. The deep south gnarly timbre of lead man Caleb is always a treat, and is perfectly placed among strung out guitar and snap solid snare. The production here is top notch, but to appreciate this band you've got to see the live show because there's not a rock 'n roll band quite like them (except maybe the Hold Steady). It's not released 'til September 15th, but we like to be ahead of the game here at the Press and this is as catchy as an STD.
