THE ‘Outlander effect’ has seen visitors to Culross increase after parts of the popular TV series was filmed in the village.

Figures compiled by Fife Council show visits to Culross Palace are up by nine per cent, while Falkland Palace has seen a leap of 12 per cent.

But locals in Culross are worried that tourists coming to the village may be getting a bad impression, thanks to two dilapidated buildings in the area. The former Dundonald Arms, in Mid Causeway, is overgrown and boarded up. Sandhaven House is also in a poor condition, while dilapidated McKenzie House is set to be renovated by the National Trust.

Community council chairman David Alexander said: “It’s something we’re very concerned about, these buildings going to rack and ruin. We have been saying since the summer and nothing has changed.”

But Mr Alexander, who owns the Red Lion pub in the village, added that the increase in tourism has still been good for business: “We’ve had a busy year, despite the bad weather. It’s been a good year for us.”
