TORRYBURN Primary held a French café for all the children and staff in the school and nursery last Friday to practice their skills in learning French from Primary 1-7.

Mr McCafferty, class teacher and leader of French within the school, has been working with all pupils in preparation for this event, however, it was the Primary 7 pupils who had overall responsibility for planning and running the French café. The senior pupils took on a variety of roles, including planning, advertising and budgeting with one group even making a ‘pitch’ to their headteacher, Mrs Mellis, for an initial investment to help fund the business.

Pupils then put their enterprising skills to work on the day itself and experienced all aspects of running and organising a successful café. The policy on the day was ‘No shoes, no French, no service’ with all pupils being encouraged to speak in French throughout.

Mr McCafferty said: “It was fantastic to see all of our children and staff so confident and giving it a go. The Primary 7s have certainly had a very busy day serving all their customers, but their hard work has brought them great success. In total, they have raised £83 profit, all of which will go towards funding their end-of-year leavers’ trip, and this project has helped them develop many fundamental skills required for later life, including the world of work.”

Tamsin Johnston, development officer for 1+2 Languages with Fife Council, came along on the day and was so impressed with the Torryburn pupils and their commitment and enthusiasm for the venture, which put French in action within a real life context. Très bien Torryburn!
