EXCITED kids from Beaver groups across West Fife got their hands dirty at the weekend by planting special space seeds for an experiment which is out of this world!

The idea of the ‘rocket science’ event came about when astronaut Tim Peake was sent up to the space station last year.

He took some seeds with him and they have since returned to Earth, with lucky groups of people around the UK getting chosen to plant them.

Dunfermline District Beavers were lucky enough to be picked and on Saturday they planted the space seeds alongside some normal seeds, which will be grown for six weeks to see if the lack of gravity affects how they sprout.

The 26th Fife (Watson) colony hosted the day, with visitors from groups across the region, including the 26th Fife (Kerr), 83rd Fife (Cairneyhill), 39th Fife (Carron Grove), 62nd Fife (Crossford), 81st Fife (Limekilns) and 44th Fife (St Leonard’s).

With a total of 200 seeds to plant, there was more than enough to go round and the Beavers were very excited to sow the seeds before enjoying the rest of the morning playing games.

On hand to help was Hilary Watson, assistant district commissioner for the Beavers, alongside district commissioner Joe Rosiejak, district Beaver Scout leader Sarah MacKean and 26th Saturday leader Sarah-Jane Dale.

Ms Watson said: “What an amazing chance to be a part of cutting-edge technology.

“We will be taking the seeds to every Beaver colony in Dunfermline district so that everyone can be part of the experiment.”
