A MEMORIAL golf day in memory of a Dunfermline man who died at the age of 52 has teed up more than £4,000 for charity.

Family and friends of Brian Wilson, who passed away last year after suffering from a blood clot, held the event at Canmore Golf Club on Friday to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation.

Popular HGV driver Brian, who worked for Cowdenbeath firm Williamson Haulage, was a keen golfer and 80 players took part in a Texas Scramble competition bearing his name, which is set to become an annual event, followed by an evening function at the golf club.

The start of the day’s play was signalled by the air horn from Brian’s lorry – brought to the course especially for the occasion – and a team from Cowdenbeath-based Bay Travel were crowned as the victors.

But the real winners were the British Heart Foundation and Brian’s nephew, Craig Sword, said: “It was a tremendous day and we’ve managed to raise £4,070. Brian’s niece Amy made £185 selling loom bands, so she’s over the moon.

"Although it was a mad rush to get everything organised, it went a lot better than expected and one of the boys even got a hole-in-one on the seventh.

“It was a bit teary at the start but the family found it easier as the day went on. After the golf, we had the presentation then the event at night and the place was packed; we could’ve sold tickets five times over.

“It’s looking so far as though we’ll have a full entry for next year, which is fantastic. The family would like to thank the Co-operative Funeralcare who sponsored the day, put up the shield for the winners and even some prize money as well. It’s all going to a good cause and it went amazingly well.”
