A DUNFERMLINE Tesco worker shaved her head for Cancer Research UK in memory of her friend’s dad, Raith Rovers media officer Ally Gourlay.

Hazel Hall, 24, is close friends with Ally’s son Matthew and wanted to do something for club stalwart Ally, who lost his battle with cancer earlier this year aged 53.

Friends, family and colleagues watched as Hazel braved the shave in Tesco’s Fire Station store last week and she was delighted to raise close to £1,000.

“Ally wanted to do other charity work before he passed away, so I thought I’d do one more charity in his name,” she said.

“I always had the head shave idea because people with cancer sadly have to go through chemotherapy and lose their hair. I had the choice and I thought it would be quite a big thing to raise lots of money.

“It was so emotional. I kept getting messages from people telling me why they donated, that they’d lost someone. It was such an emotional day seeing how much it meant to so many people.

“Everyone at Tesco was brilliant. I don’t even remember who was all there egging me on because I had my head down the whole time! Matthew was there and I could see what it meant to him.”

Several of her male colleagues were roped into getting their legs and chest waxed and Hazel even managed to get Matthew to take part!

"We didn’t tell him before because we knew he’d back out, but he took it like a trooper!” she said.

“Quite a lot of staff got involved and we had a teddy bear tombola for the kids too.”

Hazel is now focusing on collecting her sponsor money for Cancer Research UK – and getting used to her new haircut.

“I didn’t realise how cold it was!” she said. “I walked across the bridge and the wind was going in my ears. It’s for such a good cause. I’ve raised £520 on my Just Giving page, £265 on the day and I’ve still got paper sponsors which are around £150.”
