STRICKEN Dunfermline judo star Stephanie Inglis has been moved from Vietnam to Bangkok for specialist care as she continues her battle to recover from a horror motorcycle accident.

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Stephanie, who lives in Duloch, has been in a coma since being thrown off a bike that was taking her to a school in Ha Long, in the north-east of Vietnam, where she had been teaching English for the last four months to underprivileged children.

She suffered serious head and brain injuries after being dragged from the vehicle when her dress caught in the wheel of the bike.

But accessing treatment has been complicated because her multi-trip insurance policy was only valid for the first 31 days she was in the country.

That prompted her friend Khalid Gehlan to set up a GoFundMe fundraising page to raise the money needed to meet the costs of her care – said to be £2,000 per day – and of an air ambulance to bring her back to the UK.

Louise Ferrier, who runs the Centre Stage Dance Academy in Crossgates and is Stephanie’s cousin, said she was due to be moved to the Thai capital to continue treatment yesterday (Wednesday).

That has now happened and Stephanie has been admitted to hospital in Bangkok, where Louise added that Stephanie's parents found her "in great care", while doctors are set to carry out a full analysis on her condition.

She remains in a coma and has since developed pneumonia and Louise said: “Her mum and dad have said she is being moved to Bangkok but there was a tropical storm on Tuesday night and then a technical fault with the aircraft.

“Her body was rejecting the antibiotics she was on so we’re just waiting to hear that she gets there safely and see what happens.

“Hopefully, the next course of antibiotics will help and it is a bit of a positive move, but we’re just trying to keep strong for my aunty and uncle.

“Due to everyone contributing we’ve been able to pay for the next set of antibiotics and to move her, but the doctors are still saying that it could go either way.

“Until we get confirmation that she’ll definitely pull through we’re not getting ahead of ourselves. We’re just waiting for each update and then processing it from there.”

The fundraising effort, which has been backed by a host of celebrities and sports stars including boxer Alex Arthur, Olympic cyclist Sir Chris Hoy and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, has raised the incredible sum of more than £234,000 in just 12 days.

Louise, who described her relationship with Stephanie as that of “best friends”, continued: “There are a million events going on to help and even Chris Hoy left a message.

“There are no words to say thank you to people – I can’t believe it.

“Most of the parents at the dance academy have seen the GoFundMe page and the kids are coming in with pocket money and asking: ‘What can we give for Steph? We want to help bring her home’.

“It melts your heart because most of them know Steph – she’s at a lot of their shows and she’s a bit of a celeb!

“She brought in her medal and let the kids hold it and have photos and was due to be helping them with exams they have coming up.

“Although we’re cousins, we’re like best friends – we look the same, are the same age and have the same kind of personality.

“We consult with each other and I know that when she’s better she’ll say ‘how do I say thank you’? Usually I have an answer but I don’t know what to say.

“We’re just praying for Steph and waiting.”
