THE green light has been given for a £75,000 plan to re-create a Dunfermline attraction.

Fife Council has approved a cycling proficiency track in Townhill, just like the bicycle park in the Glen that was a favoured childhood memory for many.
It disappeared in the 1980s – to the distress of the thousands of kids, and adults.

But work on an updated version, designed by Townhill Community Council chairman Ronnie Cowan, can now get under way.

He told the Press: “We won’t be hiring out tricycles as they did in the Glen and we can’t have traffic lights, as they would require power, but it’s a very simple landscape of paths, road markings and signs.”

The track will be built on overgrown land to the south of the pavilion.
Mr Cowan, talking about the plans earlier this year, said: “It’s dual purpose. It tidies up an overgrown area and gives us another attraction in the park for children, and especially for Townhill Primary School.

“Because it’s so close to the cycle path, it will give them the chance to practise away from any traffic and then they can move onto the cycle path when they’re ready.”

A Fife Council report said: “The proposed development is considered an improvement within the existing park, offering additional facilities to children and families.

“In addition the facilities would also provide a valuable educational use for children who may go on to use public roads in the future.”
