PRESS reader John Flynn brought in this photo of his great grandfather Joseph Pollock, who was killed when a World War Two bomb struck his Kingseat home.

It’s a four generations picture with, top left, Mr Pollock’s daughter, Elizabeth Pollock, granddaughter Catherine Flynn, top right, and great-granddaughter Elizabeth Dickson.

Mr Flynn, 79, who stays in Rosyth and is now a great-grandfather himself, said: “Many of the family have never seen a photo of my great-grandfather before so I wanted to share it and didn’t want people to forget what happened to him.

“He was the only civilian death in Kingseat during the Second World War – per head of population Kingseat suffered the greatest loss of civilian life!

“During the blitz of Clydeside towards the end of the war, the German air crews used the Forth and Clyde canal as a navigation route and were told if they brought any bombs home with them they would be court-martialled.

“My great-grandfather left the shelter to stoke his fire when a stray bomb hit his house in Main Street. It was the blast that killed him.

“I remember seeing him lying in a coffin in front of the fireplace at my grandmother’s house and there wasn’t a mark on him.”
