CAKES and cuppas helped to make plenty of dough for the Captain David Seath Memorial Fund.

The Yellow Coloured Cafe in Rosyth raised £934 for the charity, which was set up in memory of the Cowdenbeath commando who died while running the London Marathon in April in aid of Help For Heroes.

Captain Seath, a fire support team commander in 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, was hailed as "an inspiration" and mourners at his funeral were told he had "served his country with distinction".

Cafe owners Ewen and Maighan Brand donated the profits from the sale of their homemade cakes throughout June and handed over a cheque to Capt Seath's brother, Gary.

Ewen said: “I never knew David but it was the right thing to do. I'm friends with Gary and all my kids go to Park Road Primary, where his mum is headteacher.

“We were thinking of what we could do to help and my wife came up with the idea of the cakes.”

He added: “We had it posted up in the cafe and on Facebook and people were coming up from the dockyard just to get cakes and give some money to the fund.

“We never imagined we would make that much – we had aimed for £500, so we're really pleased to get over £900.”

The memorial fund has already topped £180,000 and will be used to provide financial grants to wounded personnel and veterans of the British Armed Forces.

To date, it has supported 154 beneficiaries, by purchasing vital specialist equipment, enabling essential rehabilitation and Post-Traumatic Shock Disorder (PTSD) therapies, supporting employment placements and establishing businesses.

A “genuinely touched” Gary said: “I knew Ewen through playing cricket at Broomhall Cricket Club (in Limekilns) and I knew he was starting up a cafe.

“It came out of the blue from him when he said he really wanted to do something in support.

“To have raised over £900 in such a short space of time is incredible and we offer our sincere thanks to Ewen and Maighan as well as everyone who has purchased cakes throughout June.

“It's a real measure of the respect people had for David – Ewen never knew my brother but he followed the media clippings and he got a real measure of the person David was professionally and as a person and it led him to carry out this wonderful gesture.”
