Police said it was pure "luck" that a baby girl was unharmed after being struck by an egg dropped from a bridge in Pittencrieff Park.

Officers are trying to catch the culprits - the incident happened around 2.30pm yesterday - and while they believe it was a "prank", they said the outcome could have been serious.

Sergeant Kenny Bow, from the Community Investigation Unit in Dunfermline, said: “The fact that the child was unhurt during this incident is more down to luck than judgement.

"While we believe that this has been done as a prank rather than out of any malice, it is extremely dangerous to drop any item from height and the consequences could have been worse for those walking below."

The seven-month-old girl was part of a group of adults and small children with pushchairs and prams when the egg was dropped from a bridge.

Fortunately, the infant was not injured and police said that inquiries are ongoing to trace whoever was responsible.

Sergeant Bow added: “We would like to remind the public, in particular children, of the risks and consequences of such reckless behaviour.

“With it being the school holidays the Glen was extremely busy and we are appealing for anyone who may have seen the culprits, or who has any information to come forward.”
