GET ready for a fun-filled Highland fling when the Inverkeithing Highland Games rolls into town on Saturday!

Organisers are hoping for good weather for the historic Games – first mentioned in burgh records of 1652 – and promise something for competitors and spectators alike.

Gates open to the public at 10am with pre-premier Highland dance action kicking off at 10.30pm, followed by the premier events at 1pm.

The Royal Burgh of Inverkeithing Pipe Band will lead a parade from the Civic Centre to Ballast Bank at 11.30am, and chieftain Alex Webster will open the Games at 12.30pm.

The track and field events start at 1pm, followed by the heavyweight events, which include putting the 16lb/22lb ball, throwing the 16lb/22lb hammer, throwing the 28lb weight by distance, throwing the 56lb weight by distance and height, tossing the caber, tug-of-war and the 60m Heilan’ Man’s Dash.

In addition, there is the tug-o'-war competition and contests for pipe bands, solo piping and drum majors.

The Fife Active Schools' Children's Highland Games will get under way around 3pm, featuring 18 specially coached primary schoolkids who be taking part in the 4x100m relay, the shot putt, caber toss and the tug-o'-war.

Visitors will also get to enjoy the array of community, craft and food stalls, bouncy castles and games, ahead of the pipe band march past finale at 5pm.

The Inverkeithing Highland Games regularly attracts thousands of spectators, and a special appeal has gone out this year for solo pipers, pipe bands and tug-o'-war teams to take part.

Track convener Frank Coyle said: “There's always something for everyone – I have yet to meet someone who's come down and not been pleasantly surprised at how long they want to stay.

“It's a great day out for all the family. We always get a lot of international visitors and we have a number of different flags flying as well, which have been donated by visitors.

“A big thank you to all our sponsors, advertisers and volunteers – they're all vital to the Games.

“We're hoping for good weather. The forecast is 19°C and relatively clear – we're quite happy with that!

Tickets cost £6 (£3 concessions; £15 family). Pipe bands interested in taking part in the parade should contact Wilma Graham on 07917 550183.
